Teaching
Excellence Institute: Teaching Science and Math Using Robotics
June 6-17,
2011, 8am-5pm M-F,
Location: Riverton High School, Riverton, WY
Looking for ways
to capture students’ interest and creativity in your science,
mathematics, or technology classroom? Join us for a two-week summer
teaching institute. Funded by the
WY Math/Science Partnership
Program, this summer institute for science, mathematics, and
technology teacher engages teachers in how to use principles of robotics
and engineering to teach fundamental principles of science, mathematics,
and technology most directly related to the target concepts tested on
the PAWS state-assessment test.
Absolutely no prior experience in robotics is necessary.
The workshop topics most directly target middle school concepts,
but the ideas and applications are easily applicable across K-12.
Using a highly participatory and interactive format, teachers
will build robotic rovers in collaborative teams to explore mysterious
planetary surfaces, control renewable energy wind turbines to generate
electricity, and operate telescopes to discover secrets of the night
sky.
Participating
teachers will also interact with scientists and engineers from around
the world in real-time via the Internet.
Teachers will work side-by-side over the Internet with
Australian astronomers using their telescopes on the night-time side of
the Earth, question popular science writers about how science fiction
becomes reality, and present their plans for robotically controlled wind
turbines and solar cells that most effectively generate electricity for
our planet. Teachers will
also learn how to teach their students to use Wyoming’s remotely
controlled telescope network. Graduate credit from the University of
Wyoming Physics Department and PTSB credits will be available.
Teacher-participants receive a stipend of $150 per day of participation
which includes 10 days of face-to-face time with scientists and master
teachers and some follow up discussions via desktop-video conferencing from your home during
the academic year – a total stipend of $1,500!
We still have
stipends available.
